and there i was...standing in this empty bathroom with 40 vacant stalls. It seemed like an interesting setting for a self-portrait. So i dug out my gear. The room was 'decorated' with tiles that glowed with a greenish cast to them and when i reviewed my photo it appeared to me that i had a moss like coating on my skin.
and the next thing i knew i was in a line of 200 lost souls in Seattle. First we were an hour late out of Portland...ok no problem. i will have plenty of time to catch my connection in Seattle. Next it was the" traffic controller delay". and whoa! who is gonna whine about that. no, we all thank the good spirit of sober air controllers for watching over us. then it is "we will update you in 90 minutes with our plans for departure". several groans, moans, rolled eyes. after about three hours of this amidst an atmosphere that virtually crackled with the annoyance and anxiety of 200 paying customers the 'service team' finally threw in the towel and announced we were to go down to the baggage area, pick up our bags and go home. "what did they say?" was heard echoing up and down and all around concourse D.
and then there are the kids who are beginning to get a little wild. they are getting sweaty, rambunctious and flushed. it is clear they are playing with abandon since they will soon be wrenched from their new best friends for life. strangers in an airport. isn't it odd how late flights, lines that don't move or rude service people tend to 'bring people together under a common umbrella of comradeship? it has a condescending tone right?. It carries a "they are foolish and dumb" and "we are not" kinda message. "We certainly are not one of the witless and inept."
i never did get out of Seattle. As a matter of fact i am here in the "Quality Inn" (with a small q) in room 207 languishing for the duration of what is an undetermined waiting period to get on a flight headed to Chicago. The only consolation among the myriad disappointments is that i have a wireless connection, two fruit pastries to eat for dinner and my own personal blankie to sleep with. i will keep you updated :)
